Design A Black History Mardi Float

Celebrate Black History Month with a little Mardi Gras fun and revelry! Students are challenged to create a Mardi Gras float using a shoebox and various craft materials. Each float should be inspired by and will honor an influential Black figure who has made a positive impact on history, culture, science, education, civil rights, or the arts. Students should choose the African American history maker that will be the focus of their float.

Students must decorate their floats using traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, green, and gold. Floats should include symbols, decorations, or images that represent the accomplishments and contributions of the chosen figure.

Students should be prepared to share who they chose and explain how their float represents that person’s achievements and legacy.

Snuggle up with a good poem! Students are tapping into their creativity as they learn about poetry and write winter-themed poems all month. Mrs. Jaimes, local reading specialist, shared strategies for teachers to build reading skills through the use of poetry during a recent PD. #MCPSS #perserverancepropelsprogress #LeadingLearning

MCPSS is partnering with Feeding the Gulf Coast to provide a box of non-perishable food to our students in need as a result of the SNAP delay. Parents and guardians of MCPSS students who are experiencing a food crisis in their household may request a one-time box of non-perishable food by completing this form by Wednesday, November 5, at noon: https://forms.office.com/r/kx5kxCBaKg For those in the community who want to help, we greatly appreciate your support. We encourage you to donate to Feeding the Gulf Coast. We have worked with Feeding the Gulf Coast to compile lists of local food banks that are helping our various communities:

Downtown, Midtown, Crichton, Toulminville, Trinity Gardens, Prichard, Chickasaw and other surrounding areas.
